The Denver-based telecom's announcement Monday was the firsy time the company publicly acknowledged that it considered sellingits long-haup network. Qwest (NYSE: Q) said it received unsolicited interestg about buying the network from an unidentified and then the company opened a competitive biddinfg process to see what price the network would attract. The bids were less than the valuse Qwest places on the network as astrategifc asset, the company said. "We have alwayes taken a disciplined, prudent approach to assessing our business inthis ever-changingv industry," said Ed Mueller, Qwest CEO and in a written statement.
"The review we conducted confirmed that our nationwide network is a tremendouws asset anddelivers best-in-class telecommunicationsw services to businesses and government agencies throughoutt the country." Long-haul networks carry large volumes of voice and data betweej major markets. It's the business Qwes initially was launchedto provide. Qwesty acquired its 14-state local telephonre business when it mergedwith U.S. West. Qwest is the largesg local phone service providert inNew Mexico.
